With an excellent effort in 2011, the Random Computing Canberra Nationals Womens Basketball team won the Grand Final this weekend, 28th August. Well done to all the team, Coach Sandy Tomley and her assistants and all the people behind the scenes.
Well deserved.
Here is a summary from the Head Coach - Sandy Tomley.
Well the tables got turned this year, and we became the Waratah Championship League Champions for 2011 yesterday with a 66-35 win over the Bankstown Bruins.
The girls really rose to the occasion over both games on the weekend.
The first game vs Manly Sea Eagles which would get us to the grand final was a great effort in team defence, keeping all their major scorers below their averages. On the other end of the floor, we pushed the tempo in Nationals style which they couldn't match, and had great patience and poise against their physical defence. Final score line 66-55. Lauren Jansen kept her great form coming into the finals series finishing with 17 points & 14 rebounds. Michaela Dalgleish had 12 points and Teagan Burke 10 points. Shelley West was a great presence in rebounding finishing with 12 rebounds for the game.
Bankstown had beaten Sydney Comets in a close and up tempo encounter on Saturday, so we knew the Grand Final would come down to endurance on Sunday. After an initial 3 pointer by Bankstown to open the game, they never had the lead again due to our superb effort on defence and focus for 40 mins. All players had that want and will to perform, and we did. Teagan Burke & Michaela Dalgleish were flawless in their game, Lauren Jansen controlled the point guard spot and Alyce Shearing was a constant presence inside. However, it was the team effort by everyone who did not allow Bankstown to gain any momentum, and eventuated in a 31 point Grand Final win!!
Teagan received the MVP award of the Grand Final, and Michaela received the Best Defensive Player award of the Grand Final. Michaela was also recognised for her contributions over the season and was named in the All Star Five team for the League.
Look for the Championship banner in the Belconnen Stadium next year.
